Location: Santa Fe, New Mexico
Dates:  July 14 – October 8, 1995

The inaugural exhibition of SITE Santa Fe presented works by thirty-one contemporary artists.

International in scope, the exhibition addressed personal, political, social, and group identities in the complex and increasingly global cultural environment.

Works in a variety of media (including painting, photography, sculpture, installation, film, video, music, and performance) were exhibited.

From the catalogue by Bruce W. Ferguson & Vincent J. Varga:

"Given the shifting and blurring structures of identity, place and self can both be seen as impossible integrations of the ideal and the real, as structures of hope and adversity.

"SITE Santa Fe’s inaugural exhibition was formulated to engage, through the work of contemporary artists, the rapidly changing relationships among individuals, communities, and global networks and institutions.

Deliberately questioning traditional and often unquestioned ideas of art and identity, the exhibition was organized to connect those issues differently, through a material symbolism recently developed by a range of artists."
